We received a terrific question last week from Jamie Keller of Verdiem Corporation. Jamie asks:
While the best solution to lessen the environmental impact of an organization is to create a holistic approach that targets everything from the cafeteria cups to the data centers, managing PC and monitor power consumption is a super important part of fixing the larger problem. I would be really interested in hearing what other folks (both at Microsoft and within the partner community) have to say about PC power management and what types of green IT strategies are working for them.
I would absolutely agree that PC Power Management is a critical area that we need to focus on to reduce the energy consumption of PCs at home and business. We’ve made great strides in Windows Vista around power management including infrastructure, functionality, and default settings. Of course, we have great partners such as Verdiem and 1E to provide advanced power management to help manage, measure and reduce energy consumption from PCs.
The impact that we can have on climate change and energy consumption is not something that we can do alone. In 2007, Microsoft collaborated with a number of well-known companies and organizations to launch the Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI). Through CSCI, Microsoft and its partners offer a unified voice on the importance of sustainable computer use. The goal is to reduce computer power consumption by 50% by 2010. In addition, CSCI offers clear guidance to individuals and businesses on how to take advantage of industry innovations and best practices that improve energy efficiency and power management.
Thanks for the question, Jamie. Feel free to get in touch with me on email, and please continue to share your thoughts here.
Francois 5月8日 DWPC 2008: MAKING A POSITIVE IMPACTBy Pam Salzer, Senior Director, Microsoft Corporation Email: pams@microsoft.com
Over the past few years, the issue of environmental sustainability has generated widespread awareness and debate at our dinner tables, on the political stage, and in a growing number of corporate boardrooms. Millions of individuals and organizations are joining the effort to find answers to tough questions about greenhouse gas emissions, species decline, loss of habitat and depletion of natural resources.
While there isn't a single solution, we're seeing incredible innovation across industries, from alternative energy and new conservation technologies to the removal of known pollutants such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from product packaging. But there's more work to be done. With technology at the forefront of many environmental sustainable solutions, we believe that Microsoft and its 400,000 partners are uniquely positioned to help people and businesses drive positive change.
I invite you to join us next Thursday, May 15th, 2008, for our Go Green Webcast. Allison Watson, CVP of Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Group, and Rob Bernard, Microsoft's Chief Environmental Strategist, will talk about Microsoft’s Environmental Sustainability strategy and the role you can play in helping customers reduce their impact on the environment. Allison and Rob will also take your questions live during the show. If you aren't able to participate in the live broadcast, you can watch the on demand replay posted to the Digital Worldwide Partner Conference 2008 site.
The purpose of this blog is to support ongoing dialogue about environmental sustainability before, during and after the webcast. I encourage you to post your thoughts and questions here by using the ‘Add a comment' link below. Microsoft team members and other partners will be visiting the site to respond to questions and offer their insight.
We hope to see you next Thursday for the Go Green webcast. In the meantime, you can check out our other webcasts and blog sites by visiting the DWPC 2008 site.
